Typhoid Vaccine Information

Typhoid is a bacterial infection that can spread throughout the body, affecting many organs. Without prompt treatment, it can cause serious complications and can be fatal.

Typhoid is found worldwide wherever the sanitation and hygiene is poor. However it is extremely rare in developed areas such as Western Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and Japan.

Signs and Symptoms

The initial symptoms of Typhoid can begin anywhere between 1-2 weeks after being infected. If treated properly the symptoms will cure within 3-5 days. However if untreated over the course of a few weeks the impact of the infection can cause life-threatening complications. Sufferers can experience the following common symptoms:
  • Fever and Flu like symptoms
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Aches and pains
  • Lost appetite
  • Constipation or Diarrhoea
  • A rash which show small pink spots

Taking precautions from Typhoid

While travelling, only drink water from a sealed bottle or from sources that have been treated by filtration, boiling or tablets. Try to extremely avoid drinking tap water. Also avoid uncooked food, only eat fruit that you can peel and make sure all hot food is freshly cooked. Wash your hands regularly and maintain a strict hygiene routine.

Prevention

Typhoid is preventable by having a vaccination, it is 75% effective against the illness. However if infected, Typhoid is treatable with antibiotics administered early on.
